Happy Birthday, dear St. Mary's
ImageThe new St Mary's church turned 150 years old in June 2008.  Find out about two people who really fought against slavery .....

Dear TimeLine,

Referring back to your issue 13 March 2007, your readers may be interested to know that the tombs of James Stephen and Anna Laetitia Barbauld (who both feature in this issue of TimeLine) have recently been listed by English Heritage as of historical and architectural interest.
Efforts are now being made by St Mary's Church Stoke Newington to have both tombs cleaned and repaired.  The conservation work will cost £5,500.   The Heritage of London Trust has promised £2000 towards the cost, and applications have also been made to other grant-making bodies.
ImageWe now wish to interest the Hackney community in this modest but significant project, and are seeking support from some well known personalities as patrons of our appeal.
There is to be a public lecture about Anna Barbauld on Sunday 29th June at 8 pm in Old St Mary's Church, Stoke Newington Church Street.  The speaker will be Dr Emma Mason of Warwick University, who has particularly studied her poetry and other writings.   Not only was Barbauld an Abolitionist, she is now regarded as a significant woman writer (as indeed she was by her contemporaries).

With best wishes,

Revd. Graeme Watson, St. Mary's Church, Stoke Newington, N16
