Bertha: aged four forever |
|
When they spotted a faint inscription in Abney Park Cemetery, history detectives followed clues that led them to the sad story about the life and times of Bertha Allsop who died aged four years and six months. This is what they discovered :
The detectives had first noticed the big stone statue in the cemetery from the bus window. When they went to see what it said on the gravestone, this is what they found:
IN AFFECTIONATE MEMORY OF OUR DARLING DAUGHTER
BERTHA EILEEN ALLSOP WHO FELL ASLEEP 19TH AUGUST 1916
AGED FOUR YEARS & SIX MONTHS
GONE FROM US, AND NOT FORGOTTEN,
NEVER SHALL HER MEMORY FADE,
SWEETEST THOUGHTS SHALL EVER LINGER
ROUND THE SPOT WHERE SHE IS LAID
ALSO FRANK TRIGANCE ALLSOP WHO WAS KILLED IN ACTION
IN FRANCE 29TH SEPTEMBER 1918 AGED 21 YEARS
FRANK CHARLES ALLSOP BELOVED FATHER OF THE ABOVE
WHO FELL ASLEEP 29TH NOVEMBER 1949 AGED 72 YEARS
So they started to wonder who little Bertha was, and why her life had been so short. And they found out loads that told them a lot about what life was like almost a hundred years ago.
